If you've searched for "California Energy Initiative" online, you've probably seen a mix of results — some positive, some skeptical, and some that confuse us with other organizations or government programs. We want to address that directly.
This post explains who we are, what we do, how we're different from government programs with similar names, and — most importantly — how you can verify everything we claim.
Who We Are
California Energy Initiative (CEI) is a private solar and battery storage company based in Sacramento, California. We help homeowners access solar panel installation, home battery systems, and state and federal incentive programs — including the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP).
We are not a government agency. We are not a utility company. We are a private contractor that works with homeowners to design, install, and maintain residential solar and battery systems.

What We Do
Our core services include:
Solar Panel Installation: We design and install residential solar energy systems sized for your home's energy consumption, roof configuration, and budget. Every system we install uses Tier 1 equipment with manufacturer warranties.
Battery Storage: We install home battery systems that provide backup power during outages and help you maximize savings under California's time-of-use rate structure. Our battery installations can qualify for SGIP rebates.
Incentive Navigation: California's energy incentive landscape is complex. We help homeowners understand and access programs like SGIP, the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC), and NEM 3.0 billing — so you get every dollar you're entitled to.
Our process is straightforward:
You schedule a consultation — we assess your home, energy usage, and goals
We design a system and provide a transparent quote with all costs and incentives itemized
If you move forward, we handle permits, installation, inspection, and utility interconnection
We submit SGIP and other incentive applications on your behalf
"California Energy Initiative" — the Name Confusion
We want to be upfront about something: the phrase "California Energy Initiative" can be confusing.
Here's why:
California has multiple official energy programs and policies — such as SGIP, the California Solar Initiative (CSI), Energy Upgrade California, and SB 100 (the state's 100% clean energy policy). None of these are called "California Energy Initiative," but the similarity in naming can lead to confusion.
There is also a separate website — californiaenergyinitiative.org — that is a different organization not affiliated with us (cainitiative.com). We operate exclusively through cainitiative.com.
We understand this can be confusing, and we've taken steps to be as transparent as possible — including building our transparency page with all verifiable credentials.
Addressing the Mailer Concerns
We know that some homeowners have received mailers about solar energy and SGIP that raised questions. The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and PG&E have both warned consumers about misleading solar marketing in the state — and we take those warnings seriously.
What we believe in:
Marketing should be accurate and not impersonate utility companies
Homeowners should never feel pressured into quick decisions
SGIP is a voluntary program — no one is required to participate
Every claim should be verifiable
What we ask of you: Verify us. Check our CSLB license. Read our BBB profile. Read our Google reviews. Ask us any question directly. We welcome the scrutiny because we know our credentials hold up.
How We're Different from the Government Programs
To help clear up any confusion, here's a quick comparison:
California Energy Initiative (us) | Official CA Programs (SGIP, CSI, etc.) | |
|---|---|---|
What it is | Private solar/battery contractor | Government-administered incentive programs |
Who runs it | CEI (private company) | CPUC, CEC, utilities (PG&E, SCE, etc.) |
What we do | Install solar and batteries, help homeowners access incentives | Provide rebates, set program rules, manage budgets |
Our website | cainitiative.com | cpuc.ca.gov, selfgenca.com |
How to verify | CSLB license, BBB profile, Google reviews | CPUC program pages, utility websites |
We work within these official programs — we don't replace them. When we help a homeowner apply for SGIP, the application goes through the official SGIP portal and is reviewed by the program administrator (your utility). We don't control eligibility or approval — the program does.
Our Commitment to Transparency
We're building this company on a foundation of trust. That means:
Every credential we claim is independently verifiable — we encourage you to check
We'll never pressure you into a decision — if you need time to research and compare, take it
We explain the programs accurately — including limitations, eligibility requirements, and funding availability
We're responsive to feedback — if something about our process or communication can be improved, we want to hear it
If you have questions about who we are, what we do, or how we operate, contact us directly. We'd rather answer your questions honestly than have you rely on third-party sources that may not have the full picture.
Have questions? Contact us directly or call our office. We're happy to walk you through our credentials and answer anything you want to know.
